Miguel I of Portugal

1802–1866

Miguel I was king of Portugal from 1828 to 1834 after overthrowing the constitutional settlement associated with his niece Maria II. His absolutist rule produced the Portuguese Liberal Wars, ending in his defeat, exile and the restoration of the constitutional monarchy.

Miguel I of Portugal also held the offices or ranks of King of Portugal and the Algarves, Infante of Portugal, Duke of Beja, and Senhor da Casa do Infantado. Miguel I of Portugal belonged to the House of Braganza and operated within Kingdom of Portugal. Miguel I of Portugal was born in Lisbon and died in Esselbach.

Allan Mallinson’s Rumours of War is set during the Portuguese succession crisis of 1826, when the claims and absolutist politics associated with Miguel threaten the constitutional settlement made for Maria II. Matthew Hervey joins a British mission sent to support the regency as Spain and other European powers consider intervention. Miguel is therefore less a battlefield character than the political force behind the approaching civil conflict, giving Hervey’s mission its urgency while the novel links the new crisis to memories of the Peninsular War.
