The Dissolution of the Monasteries took place under Henry VIII after the break with Rome. Monasteries, priories and convents were investigated, suppressed and stripped of their lands and goods. The policy destroyed institutions that had shaped worship, charity, education and local identity for centuries.
The dissolution mattered because it redistributed land and power on a huge scale. It enriched the crown and many families, but also provoked resistance and left spiritual and social gaps. Ruined abbeys became physical reminders of religious change.
C. J. Sansom’s Dissolution uses this setting directly, making the closure of a monastery the centre of a Shardlake mystery. Hilary Mantel’s Cromwell novels also show how policy, profit, fear and reform intersected around the destruction of religious houses.
