The second volume begins with the restricted Sikh state created after the First Anglo-Sikh War and the British-controlled regency governing for Duleep Singh. It traces the Multan crisis of 1848, the rebellion centred on Dewan Mulraj and Herbert Edwardes's improvised campaigns at Kinyeri and Sadusam. The siege of Multan is placed within the broader spread of resistance led by Sher Singh and Chattar Singh Attariwalla, and within the political calculations of Frederick Currie, the Lawrence brothers and Governor-General Dalhousie.

Singh then follows Hugh Gough's northern campaign through Ramnagar, Sadullapur and the costly Battle of Chillianwala, before the fall of Multan released heavy artillery for the decisive victory at Gujrat. The surrender of the Sikh armies and annexation of the Punjab conclude the political narrative. As in the first volume, campaign analysis is paired with eyewitness accounts, maps, period illustrations, modern photographs and guides to the principal battlefields.
