Siege of Multan

The struggle for Multan began with the uprising of April 1848 and developed into a prolonged siege of the city and fortress held by Dewan Mulraj. Early operations relied on irregular and allied troops before regular East India Company forces arrived.
The first formal siege was interrupted when Sikh troops under Sher Singh Attariwalla joined the rebellion. Renewed operations under William Whish used heavy artillery to breach the defences and storm positions around the city.
Mulraj surrendered on 22 January 1849. The fall of Multan released troops and siege artillery that reinforced Hugh Gough before the decisive battle of Gujrat.
