In 1918, James Martingell is knighted for supplying the British Army, only to discover that peace threatens the arms business on which his fortune depends. Major Richard Elligan is sent to stop him, but the mission is compromised when Elligan falls in love with Martingell’s daughter Lanne.
Martingell pursues one final transaction across an Asia fractured by civil war, betrayal and collapsing imperial authority. The journey turns the former patriotic supplier into a fugitive legend and transfers the future of the family enterprise to Richard and Lanne. The post-1918 setting makes clear that the demand for weapons survives the peace settlement even when governments attempt to deny responsibility for the trade.
