Billy Boyle is ordered to extract a British Special Operations Executive officer from Crete and escort him to southern France, where he will help identify collaborators after the failed Vercors uprising. The officer has accumulated enemies among resistance groups, intelligence services and men whose wartime conduct is now under examination.
While protecting his difficult charge, Billy investigates a murder accusation against an innocent comrade. His path crosses that of SOE agent Christine Granville and the Japanese American soldiers of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, placing the case within a landscape of partisan rivalry, racial prejudice and advancing Allied armies.
