Christine Granville

1908–1952

Christine Granville, born Krystyna Skarbek, was a Polish-born intelligence agent who worked for Britain during the Second World War. One of the earliest and longest-serving female agents associated with the Special Operations Executive, she carried out missions in occupied Europe and helped secure the release of fellow agents facing execution in France.

In James R. Benn’s From the Shadows, Granville appears during Billy Boyle’s mission through Crete and newly liberated France. Her presence links the fictional murder investigation to the dangerous work of SOE agents, partisan warfare and the uncertain transition from occupation to liberation.
