On Christmas Day 1944, Billy Boyle visits Diana Seaton at RAF Hawkinge, where German-speaking members of the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force are conducting Operation Corona. Many are Jewish refugees, and their broadcasts imitate German controllers in order to misdirect enemy night fighters away from Allied bombers.
Billy and Diana discover a murdered American airman carrying highly classified papers near the White Cliffs of Dover. The evidence leads from codebreaking and radio deception to war-torn Yugoslavia, where an escaped prisoner may be the only witness able to explain what was stolen and why someone inside the Allied system is prepared to kill for it.
