As Nazi Germany approaches defeat, Colonel Johann Faust develops a covert plan intended to provoke the advancing American and Soviet armies into fighting one another. Captain Dieter Neukirk, once Faust’s protégé, is more concerned with preventing the pointless destruction of his remaining soldiers than with obeying orders for a final stand.

In Berlin, hospital social worker Elsa Klein risks execution by treating hidden Jews and supplying false papers, while wounded American officer Mack Mackenzie is ordered to investigate reports of a secret German operation. Their paths converge in the final campaign inside Germany, where a decision made between two approaching armies could end the war or create a new conflict.

The novel was also published under the alternative title Desperate Ground.
