Private Ethan Shard serves with the United States occupation forces in Japan in 1950 while enriching himself through theft and the black market. When North Korean forces invade the South, Shard and his accomplice Elliot “Skitter” Skinner are rushed into an improvised American unit sent to slow the advance.
Their first engagement ends in capture, leaving the two soldiers exposed to hunger, extreme weather, violence and interrogation. Shard must conceal what he knows, manage the consequences of his own corruption and decide how far he will go to keep himself and the other prisoners alive.
