Billy Boyle has barely become a detective in the Boston police when family influence secures him what he expects will be a safe posting. He arrives in wartime Britain and discovers that his distant relative is General Dwight D. Eisenhower, who wants Billy to investigate a suspected spy within the Norwegian government in exile.
A theft and two murders force Billy to work among King Haakon VII, Norwegian officials, soldiers and diplomats whose private loyalties may conflict with Allied strategy. As plans are discussed for an invasion of occupied Norway, he must learn quickly which evidence matters and whether an apparently ordinary Boston cop can survive political pressure, deception and wartime violence.
