Freegift Cooper is born enslaved in colonial Connecticut. After his mother reveals that the disgraced American general Benedict Arnold is his father, emancipation gives Freegift the chance to search for him with only a newspaper clipping and his mother’s account as evidence.
A journey toward New London draws Freegift into conflict with river pirates before he joins the local militia, forms a relationship with a Pequot woman named Martine and serves aboard the privateer Minerva. When British and Hessian forces attack the Connecticut coast, he must choose between confronting Arnold, protecting his new community and securing the independent life he has begun to build.
