Billy Boyle wakes in a Sicilian field hospital with no memory of how he arrived there. A yellow silk handkerchief marked with the initial L gradually leads him back to his mission: he was sent ahead of the Allied invasion to use a token from Lucky Luciano and make contact with the Sicilian Mafia.
As his memory returns, Billy discovers that counterfeit Army currency is being used to exploit the chaos of occupation. The scheme links criminal networks, military supply lines and Vito Genovese, leaving Billy to determine whom he can trust while Allied troops advance across the island and local factions prepare for the political order that will follow.
