Egypt was governed as a special imperial province after the defeat of Cleopatra and Mark Antony. Its grain supply was strategically important to Rome, and senatorial access was restricted.

Alexandria combined Greek institutions, Egyptian traditions, Jewish communities, maritime commerce and royal-era scholarly foundations. The Museion and associated library remained symbols of intellectual prestige despite changes over time.
