Howard Carter

1874–1939

Howard Carter was a British archaeologist best known for discovering the tomb of Tutankhamun. Working with the financial support of Lord Carnarvon, he excavated in the Valley of the Kings and opened the largely intact royal tomb in 1922 after years of searching.

Howard Carter was born in Brompton and died in London. After years of archaeological work in Egypt, Carter began excavating for Lord Carnarvon in the Valley of the Kings and discovered Tutankhamun’s tomb in 1922; the largely intact burial transformed both Egyptology and popular interest in ancient Egypt.

In Elizabeth PetersTomb of the Golden Bird, in 1922, Emerson remains convinced that Tutankhamun’s tomb lies in the Valley of the Kings, but the excavation rights belong to Howard Carter and Lord Carnarvon. In Christian Jacq’s The Tutankhamun Affair, The novel follows the early twentieth-century search for Tutankhamun’s tomb, focusing on Howard Carter and Lord Carnarvon as they pursue the hidden burial of a little-known pharaoh in the Valley of the Kings. M. J. Trow’s Lestrade and the Kiss of Horus draws Howard Carter into its Egyptian mystery through his discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb, surrounding the archaeologist with the deaths and rumours that later fed the popular idea of a pharaoh’s curse.
