Crocodile on the Sandbank

by Elizabeth Peters Book 1 in the Amelia Peabody series.

First published 1975

4.2(7,043)

In 1884, the independently wealthy Amelia Peabody leaves England to travel through Europe and the Middle East. After rescuing Evelyn Barton-Forbes from an abusive situation in Rome, Amelia takes her new companion to Egypt, where they encounter the irascible archaeologist Radcliffe Emerson and his more diplomatic brother Walter at an excavation near Amarna.

A shambling mummy begins terrorising the camp while accidents, threats and concealed identities disrupt the dig. Amelia refuses to accept a supernatural explanation and sets out to expose the person using Egyptological theatrics to frighten the excavators, even as the investigation entangles Evelyn and Walter and brings Amelia into increasingly combative partnership with Emerson.
