The Twelfth Transforming

by Pauline Gedge

First published 1984

4.1(1,299)

Queen Tiye watches the prosperous reign of Amenhotep III give way to the radical programme of their son Akhenaten. Convinced that the Aten is the only true god, the new pharaoh attacks Egypt’s traditional cults, builds a capital at Akhetaten and places religious conviction above the institutions that have sustained the kingdom.

The novel follows Tiye, Nefertiti and the royal family as court life becomes increasingly isolated from political and military reality. Akhenaten’s revolution fractures the dynasty and leaves his successors to manage the abandoned capital, damaged temples and disputed inheritance of the Amarna period.
