Seventeen years after Thu’s banishment, the young officer Kamen stops at Aswat and accepts a box from the village woman whom travellers dismiss as mad. The box contains the account of Thu’s life and threatens men who have prospered by concealing their part in the conspiracy against Ramesses III.

General Paiis sends Kamen south with an assassin, forcing him to protect Thu while investigating his own uncertain parentage.
