Harem Conspiracy against Ramesses III

The Harem Conspiracy was a palace plot late in the reign of Ramesses III. Queen Tiye and supporters of her son Pentawer sought to alter the succession, and the conspiracy succeeded in killing the pharaoh but failed to place Pentawer securely on the throne. The surviving judicial record preserves a rare view of elite intrigue, trial and punishment in New Kingdom Egypt.

The event mattered because it exposed the vulnerability of royal power inside the palace. Succession politics, household factions, magical accusations, interrogations and executions all appear in the evidence, making the conspiracy one of the most dramatic political episodes of late pharaonic Egypt.
