Alexander the Great became king of Macedon in 336 BC after the assassination of Philip II. He secured Greece, crossed into Asia, defeated the Persian Empire, and pushed his army as far as India. His reign was short, but it changed the political and cultural map of the eastern Mediterranean and Near East.

Alexander matters because he turned Greek and Macedonian power into an empire of extraordinary scale. His victories destroyed Achaemenid Persia and created new cities, dynastic struggles, and cultural exchanges. His death in 323 BC left no stable succession and produced the Hellenistic world.

Alexander is one of the most heavily fictionalised figures in ancient history.
