Siege of Tyre

The Siege of Tyre took place in 332 BC when the island city resisted Alexander’s demand for entry. Alexander built a causeway, assembled naval support, and eventually stormed the city after a long and difficult siege. The capture was followed by severe punishment of the defenders.
Tyre mattered because it showed Alexander’s determination and the logistical reach of his army. The siege secured the eastern Mediterranean coast and removed a major obstacle before his advance into Egypt. It also revealed the brutality that could accompany his claims of liberation and kingship.
Tyre is a strong setting for novels about siege engineering, stubborn resistance, and the darkening edge of conquest.
