Gedrosian Desert March

After leaving India, Alexander led part of his army through Gedrosia while the fleet followed the coast. The route offered little water or food and supply plans repeatedly failed.
Soldiers, camp followers and animals died in large numbers. Ancient explanations for the decision differ, but the march became one of the most destructive episodes of the expedition.
In The Persian Boy, the crossing tests Bagoas's devotion and marks the point at which conquest has become inseparable from exhaustion, grief and Alexander's refusal to limit his ambitions.
