Wellington’s Offensive in Spain
1812 CE
Wellington’s 1812 offensive shifted the Peninsular War from the defence of Portugal to sustained operations inside Spain. The allied army captured the frontier fortresses of Ciudad Rodrigo and Badajoz, then defeated Marshal Marmont at Salamanca in July and entered Madrid in August.
The campaign did not end in uninterrupted success: Wellington failed to capture Burgos and withdrew before converging French forces later in the year. Even so, the operations broke the old frontier barrier, weakened French control in central Spain and prepared the way for the decisive allied advances of 1813.
