Britain, AD 43. Claudius sends the legions across the Channel, forcing Caratacus and Togodumnus to organise resistance among tribes that remain divided over whether to fight, submit or profit from Rome. The campaign tests Caratacus’s authority in battle and his ability to preserve alliances after defeat. As Roman forces advance, he begins the long struggle that will make him the best-known British opponent of the conquest.
Caratacus’s greatest problem is political fragmentation. Some British rulers prefer accommodation with Rome, others see opportunities in their neighbours’ weakness and only a few accept the need for coordinated resistance. The novel therefore presents conquest as a process enabled by local rivalry as much as Roman military strength, with Caratacus trying to create unity faster than the legions can advance.
