AD 573. The war that has divided Languoreth’s family reaches its breaking point at Arfderydd. Angharad, separated from her family, travels through Pictish territory, while Lailoken retreats into exile, traumatised by the battle and increasingly identified with the prophetic figure Myrddin.

In the aftermath, the balance among the northern kingdoms grows more fragile. Languoreth must protect her position within Christian Strathclyde as Anglian power presses westward, while Lailoken and the young warrior Artúr search for a way to unite divided factions against a larger threat. The novel broadens the series beyond court and family conflict into warfare, displacement and the political consequences of religious change.
