Harald Hardrada has fought from Norway to Byzantium and returned to claim a crown. In 1066, the exiled English earl Tostig Godwinson offers him a new prize: the throne held by Tostig’s brother Harold. A fleet sails to northern England, where victory at Fulford appears to confirm Harald’s belief that boldness can still decide kingdoms.
The campaign ends at Stamford Bridge when Harold Godwinson’s army arrives after a rapid march. This record represents the retitled 2026 edition of Treece’s 1964 historical novel The Last of the Vikings. It is retained because it has a protected HBS book key, but the alternative-title relationship is recorded to prevent the two entries being mistaken for separate narratives.
