Allan Quatermain and Lady Ragnall inhale the visionary drug taduki and experience what may be memories of former lives. Allan becomes Shabaka, an Egyptian noble and hunter serving a country subordinated to the Achaemenid Great King, while Lady Ragnall appears as Amada, a priestess of Isis whose fate is bound to Shabaka’s love and Egypt’s attempt to recover its freedom.
Most of the novel is a historical fantasy of Persian-ruled Egypt, combining revolt, court intrigue, warfare and religious vows with a modern frame of reincarnation and occult memory. Haggard freely invents rulers and events, but he places the imagined struggle within the real political relationship between Egypt and the Achaemenid Empire.
