Englishman Thomas Wingfield pursues his mother’s murderer across the Atlantic and arrives in Mexico during the Spanish invasion. He is absorbed into the Aztec world, marries Otomie, a daughter of Moctezuma, and experiences the siege and destruction of Tenochtitlan from within the society under attack.
The revenge plot becomes a broad historical adventure about conquest, alliance, religious violence and cultural catastrophe. Hernán Cortés, Moctezuma II and Cuauhtémoc appear beside fictional characters as Haggard depicts the collapse of the Aztec Empire and the moral cost of Spanish victory.
