Twin English knights Godwin and Wulf d’Arcy travel east after their cousin Rosamund is abducted into the political world of Saladin. Rivalry for her love is tested by captivity, warfare and encounters with opponents whose honour complicates the simple divisions of crusading propaganda.

Set around the wars for Jerusalem and the Third Crusade, the novel moves between England, the crusader states and Saladin’s court. It uses chivalric adventure to examine divided faith, kinship and the unstable boundaries between enemy, hostage and ally.

The Third Crusade setting complicates the cousins’ simple expectation of Christian and Muslim enemies. Saladin’s court, Frankish nobles and military orders all pursue interests that do not align neatly with faith alone, while hostages and negotiated truces create personal contact across the front line. The novel uses that ambiguity to make chivalric honour a shared language without pretending it removes the violence of crusading war.
