Margaret Castell, daughter of a London merchant, is carried into danger when Spanish agents and aristocratic ambition disrupt her intended marriage. Her search for freedom moves from early Tudor England to Spain, where court influence and the Inquisition make identity and faith matters of life and death.
The novel joins merchant London to the dynastic politics of Ferdinand and Isabella. Kidnapping, trial and courtly intrigue provide the adventure, while the contrast between English commerce and Spanish religious authority gives the romance a sharply defined late-fifteenth-century setting.
