The sixth Allan Quatermain volume and middle novel of the Zulu sub-trilogy is set during Mpande’s reign and Cetshwayo’s emergence as a political force. Its fictional tragedy is inseparable from royal faction, regimental power and the succession struggles of the later Zulu kingdom.
