Under the influence of taduki, Allan Quatermain experiences the life of Wi, a hunter living in a prehistoric community threatened by climate, hunger, rival groups and the advance of ice. Wi’s struggle to protect his people and establish new ways of living turns the adventure away from colonial Africa and toward an imagined human society at the edge of an Ice Age.
Haggard presents prehistory through reincarnation rather than archaeological reconstruction, linking Wi to the recurring characters and moral conflicts of the Quatermain cycle. The novel mixes survival fiction, migration and speculative social development with the period’s conjectures about early humanity.
