Seeking knowledge of the dead, Allan Quatermain follows the counsel of the Zulu seer Zikali and travels north with the warrior Umslopogaas. The journey leads them to the ruined city of Kôr and to Ayesha, the immortal ruler known as She, who enlists the newcomers in her struggle against Rezu and offers Allan disturbing visions of lives beyond death.

The crossover joins the Allan Quatermain and She cycles in a lost-world adventure of war, prophecy and immortality. Its geography and peoples are fictional, but the expedition retains the equipment, assumptions and unequal encounters associated with late Victorian travel narratives in Africa.
