Travelling through East Africa with Hans, Allan Quatermain meets Kaneke, the formidable ruler of an isolated village, and becomes involved in the rescue of the Englishman John Taurus Arkle. Their route leads to Lake Mone, where an oracle known as the Shadow or Treasure of the Lake occupies an island at the centre of a sacred landscape.
One of Haggard’s last Quatermain novels, the book combines rescue, prophecy and a hidden community with the sceptical narrator’s attempts to explain apparently supernatural events. Its invented lake kingdom is framed through the routes, firearms and trading contacts of nineteenth-century travel in eastern and central Africa.
