Book
The Great King
First published 2014
Years after Marathon, Xerxes succeeds Darius and prepares the invasion his father failed to complete. Arimnestos is selected to escort a Greek embassy intended to delay or prevent the attack, taking him back into the Persian world where royal policy, local rivalries and memories of slavery make every stage of the mission uncertain.
The journey becomes a contest of intelligence and divided allegiance as factions on both sides manipulate the embassy for their own purposes. Arimnestos must judge whether diplomacy can alter the Great King’s plans or whether he is merely travelling deeper into a trap while Greece loses the time it needs to unite.
