During an elephant-hunting journey, Allan Quatermain encounters Maiwa, a woman seeking vengeance against the ruler who murdered her child and continues to hold an English hunter captive. Allan joins her supporters, crosses difficult country and helps organise an assault on the fortified settlement where Maiwa’s enemies have concentrated their power.

The short novel turns a hunting expedition into a campaign of rescue and retribution. Its invented peoples and conflicts belong to Haggard’s colonial adventure world rather than to a documented war, but the setting draws on the mobility, firearms, trade and violent frontier encounters of nineteenth-century southern Africa.
