After defeat at the Battle of Worcester in 1651, the future Charles II must cross a country controlled by the Commonwealth while Parliament’s forces search for him. Disguises, unsafe houses and divided loyalties make every stage of the journey a test of judgement as well as endurance.

The novel follows Charles through the network of Royalists who sheltered and guided him, including Henry Wilmot and Jane Lane. His escape towards the coast becomes a portrait of a defeated king learning to survive through patience, humour and dependence on people who risk execution for helping him.
