Troubled Waters
First published 2008
In spring 1800, Alan Lewrie returns to England celebrated for his South Atlantic service and prepares the new frigate HMS Savage. His career is threatened, however, by a Jamaican sentence of death for taking enslaved men from a plantation, while the dispossessed owner pursues revenge in London.
Lewrie’s marriage is also under attack from anonymous letters mixing invention with accurate accounts of his affairs. He turns to the retired spymaster Zachariah Twigg, but Twigg’s sudden willingness to help suggests another hidden bargain, forcing Lewrie to fight simultaneously in court, society and the intelligence world.
