War of the Third Coalition
1805 CE
The War of the Third Coalition in 1805 pitted Napoleonic France and its allies against Britain, Austria, Russia and their partners. Napoleon’s Grande Armée forced the surrender of an Austrian army at Ulm and then defeated the combined Russian and Austrian armies at Austerlitz in December.
At sea, Nelson’s victory at Trafalgar destroyed the immediate prospect of a French-led invasion of Britain and confirmed British naval superiority. Austria made peace after Austerlitz, while the settlement at Pressburg strengthened French influence in Germany and Italy and accelerated the transformation of the European political order.
