In 211 BC, Carthage has lost Sicily and Hanno and Aurelia flee by ship towards Spain. Their vessel is wrecked, and local tribesmen capture them before they can reach safety. Facing enslavement and brutal treatment, they must find a way to escape and continue their journey across a country divided by war.

Aurelia’s brother Quintus is sent to Spain with his comrades under the command of Scipio. The young Roman general has been ordered to break the Carthaginian hold over most of the peninsula and avenge earlier Roman defeats.
