A Spy Among Friends

Kim Philby rises through Britain’s intelligence establishment while secretly working for the Soviet Union. His class, education and personal charm allow him to retain the trust of colleagues even as evidence accumulates around the Cambridge spy network and operations compromised by his reports to Moscow end in capture and death.

Macintyre places Philby’s friendship with MI6 officer Nicholas Elliott at the centre of the account. Their final confrontation in Beirut in 1963 produces a partial confession but also gives Philby the opportunity to escape to the Soviet Union. The betrayal is therefore examined not only as a failure of security but as the result of institutional prejudice and misplaced personal loyalty.
