In London in 1941, Mary Price meets Elizabeth Manning, a glamorous young woman preparing to travel to an inherited house in Ireland. An air raid drives them underground, and Mary later wakes in hospital to find that the staff have mistaken her for Elizabeth and given her the other woman’s suitcase, money and travel papers.
Mary accepts the identity and travels to Ireland as Beth Manning, exchanging the limitations of domestic service for a life built on another person’s name. The deception offers safety and opportunity, but every relationship she forms is threatened by the unanswered question of what happened to Elizabeth during the bombing.
