In 1968, American heiress Celia Marsdon arrives at her husband Richard’s ancestral Sussex home, where his hostility and her disturbing visions suggest that their marriage is repeating a much older tragedy. A spiritual investigation leads Celia back into a previous life in sixteenth-century England as Celia de Bohun, a dependent in a Catholic household during the religious upheavals following Henry VIII’s death.

The Tudor narrative follows Celia’s forbidden attachment to the priest Stephen Marsdon through the Protestant reforms of Edward VI and the Catholic restoration under Mary I. As persecution changes sides and personal resentment hardens, their relationship moves towards catastrophe, leaving the modern Celia and Richard to confront the consequences of a past that has never been resolved.
