In May 1313 Edward II and Queen Isabella travel to France to meet her father, Philip IV. Attacks on the queen culminate at Poissy, where her pavilion is set alight and she narrowly escapes. Hugh Corbett is ordered to discover who wants Isabella dead before the royal visit becomes an international crisis.
The investigation moves through the households and intelligence networks of the English and French courts. Isabella’s dynastic importance, her pregnancy history and the hostility surrounding Edward’s rule create several possible motives. Corbett must work under the scrutiny of two kings while recognising that the assassin may be protected by the same diplomatic ceremonies intended to display peace.
