Spanish Armada

The Spanish Armada sailed in 1588 as part of Spain’s attempt to overthrow or pressure Elizabeth I’s Protestant regime. English ships harried the fleet in the Channel, and the Spanish plan to link with an invasion force from the Low Countries failed. Storms and difficult return routes compounded the defeat.
The Armada mattered because it became a defining episode in English national memory. Its military outcome was important, but its propaganda value was even greater. Elizabeth’s regime used the crisis to present England as providentially protected and maritime-minded.
The Armada appears naturally in Elizabethan spy and naval fiction, including the worlds of Rory Clements, S. J. Parris and novels about Drake or the sea captains.
