The Elizabethan Religious Settlement followed Elizabeth I’s accession and sought a workable Protestant settlement after the reversals of Henry VIII, Edward VI and Mary I. Acts of Supremacy and Uniformity restored royal authority over the church and imposed a revised pattern of worship. The settlement tried to avoid extremes while requiring outward conformity.
It mattered because it shaped English religious life for generations. Catholics, Puritans and conforming Protestants all had to navigate its pressures. The settlement became a foundation of Elizabethan politics, policing and suspicion.
