When Wolsey falls after failing to secure the annulment of Henry VIII’s marriage to Catherine of Aragon, Cromwell survives the collapse of his patron and begins building a new position at the centre of royal government.

The novel follows the king’s pursuit of Anne Boleyn, the break with Rome and the destruction of Thomas More’s political position. Seen through Cromwell’s alert and often guarded perspective, the Tudor court becomes a place where family memory, religious conviction, law and personal favour are converted into instruments of power.
