Sixteen-year-old Charlie Marryat is sent to India as a writer for the East India Company after his father’s death leaves the family unable to support him at home. A voyage marked by privateers and pirates is followed by an even more dangerous introduction to Company service as French and British interests compete for power in southern India.
Charlie becomes involved in Robert Clive’s campaigns, including Arcot, and later witnesses the crisis in Bengal that leads from the Black Hole of Calcutta to Plassey. His changing career links a young clerk’s search for a livelihood with the military and political expansion that transforms the East India Company from a trading corporation into a territorial power.
