A young British soldier serves under Arthur Wellesley during the Peninsular War, following the army through the difficult campaigns that gradually drive French forces from Portugal and Spain. His duties bring him close to marches, reconnaissance, sieges and battles in which local knowledge and discipline matter as much as individual bravery.
The novel places personal adventure within Wellington's developing command system and the wider alliance resisting Napoleon in Iberia. As victories become more frequent, the protagonist also sees the cost imposed on soldiers and civilians by a war fought across towns, mountain roads and exhausted agricultural country.
