Young British settlers in southern Africa find their lives overtaken by the wars that transform the region at the end of the 1870s. Conflict with the Zulu kingdom and the subsequent Boer rising expose them to campaigning, siege conditions, long-distance travel and the instability of colonial frontier society.
The novel moves between military danger and the practical problems of settlement, showing how rapidly political decisions can alter the security of farms, towns and transport routes. Historical figures such as Cetshwayo and Paul Kruger stand behind events that the fictional characters experience at ground level.
